Iqaluit, Nunavut – May 21, 2025- The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is proud to announce updates were made to the Qikiqtani Truth Commission (QTC) Reports to more accurately reflect regional changes and offer the documents to a wider audience.
The updated reports are available on the QTC website, https://www.qtcommission.ca/en
Notable updates include:
- Adding footnotes, which can be used by students and researchers as an educational resource
- Updating community names, such as Kinngait and Sanirajak
- Identifying Inuit in the photographs that were previously unnamed
- Updating maps and place names in Inuktitut
- Updating Inuktitut, to reflect dialects that are used in the Qikiqtani Region
The QTC is the first Inuit-sponsored and Inuit-led social justice initiative of its kind. The work that precipitated the QTC began as early as 2000, when QIA and the Makivik Corporation of Nunavik called for the Government of Canada to launch a public inquiry into the killing of qimmiit between 1950 and 1975.
In 2010, QIA received the QTC Final report from Commissioner Igloliorte, which includes a series of 25 recommendations for implementation, which are grouped into four categories: to acknowledge and heal past wrongs; to strengthen Inuit governance; to strengthen Inuit culture; and to create healthy communities. Having prioritized recommendations, QIA is using the implementation plan as a guiding document in shaping the work related to social policy and social program delivery that is urgently required.
Recommendation 2 of the QTC Final Report states, “The QTC historical collection (reports, database and testimonies) should be made accessible to all participants and anyone interested in understanding and presenting an accurate picture of the Qikiqtani region’s history”. With that, QIA is engaged in presenting and updating part of our history, more specifically during the time of 1950 to 1975 and the revised 2024 reports include the Community Histories and Thematic Special Reports.
