Qaunaq Komangapik was born in 1958 in Arvaatuuq, an outpost camp near Arctic Bay (Ikpiarjuk). Her testimony includes information about the movement of families living in Arvaatuuq to Arctic Bay in 1967. She recalls that the move took place after the leader of the camp and the Minister told her parents that they would lose their child benefit allowance if their children did not attend school. Qaunaq remembers that her family suffered from hunger after the move. As a child, she witnessed an RCMP officer shooting her father’s dogs while they were tied up near the beach.
